Owners Mike and Aimee opened Citizen Eatery in Austin, Texas about a year ago. Citizen Eatery is a farm to table, vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurant sourcing local produce.
Their goal was to create a menu that whilst being vegetarian and vegan friendly would also satisfy the tummies of the meat lovers. Being in Texas, the home of the infamous Texas BBQ this is pretty crucial!
A lot of people feel that vegetarian and vegan food won’t curb their appetite or satisfy their taste buds. I know a raw, dressing-free garden salad is not going to make me a happy chappy for dinner! Citizen Eatery focuses a portion of its menu on the "vegetarian sceptics". Creating comforting, hearty dishes full of flavor, fun and colour.
To start, I had the vegan queso with corn and sweet potato chips. I’ve had a lot of vegan cheese that just doesn’t it cut it for me. Most vegan cheeses are made with cashew nuts which for me CAN be a little too rich and sickening. Citizen Eatery make their queso out of cashews and cauliflower. It was amazing! Super tasty and had a great smooth texture.
When I became vegetarian 7 years ago the things I missed most were the meals that were nostalgic. Homemade bolognese is a nostalgic dish for many. My Dad's was pretty darn special! One of Citizen Eatery specialties is their bolognese and I now know why. It took me back to those family bolognese dinners. I don’t eat a lot of meat substitute but this was something else! They use an organic, non-gmo meat substitute and the sauce was rich in flavour and super fresh.
If you ever find yourself in Austin, definitely pay Citizen Eatery a visit! If you’re thinking about making a change to vegetarianism Citizen Eatery is a really great way to see how the transition can be much simpler than you realise. It's just about learning new recipes and experiencing vegetables in a new way. check out their instagram and website here for more info!
