Viva Las Vegas
16.06.17 | Pool Party | Dena Amy | Rüfüs Du Sol
17.06.17 | EDC Festival | Dena Amy | Rüfüs Du Sol
If you follow my instagram I’m sure you’re very aware by now that Dena Kaplan (Dena Amy is her musical genius name) is a very special chum of mine. Over the last few years we’ve embarked on numerous adventures together. In June this year she was playing the biggest stage she’d played to date at the infamously turbo music festival EDC in Las Vegas. Our friends Rüfüs Du Sol were also playing EDC so the musical talent and the groupies all packed up our cars and road tripped to Vegas for a weekend of NON STOP FUN!
Our Vegas getaway began with Dena and the Rufus boys doing wild pool party DJ sets. We hadn’t seen the boys and their crew aka ‘crewfus’ in a while and what better way to reconnect than in 45 degree dry Vegas heat, cold ones in our hands and music in our ears. There really is never a dull moment with this family. I went back to my mermaid roots wearing a sweet skirt by designer Christian Cowan and boy did we boogie on down. Our cheeky smiles and toasted bodies then found sanctuary in the all mighty Vegas air-conditioning as we geared up for Saturdays EDC Festival.
Dena opened the festival day with a set you couldn’t help but boogie to and our special friends Rufus du Sol played the same stage later that night. Being literally in the desert it was beyond hot. The dry heat was relentless. The piercing blue sky and unencumbered sun beat down so hard we could only manage 5min out of the shade. We spent the time before the show huddled in Dena’s trailer, aircon blasting, sipping drinks, playing games, listening to music and just being our usual silly selves. Dena of course was a pro and somehow managed to get up on that stage out in the open air, look stunning AND perform like a champion.
Our friendship circle is full of people with a multitude of creative desires. Over the years we’ve begun to make links and bleed our artistic ventures into each other. I love taking photos of my friends and documenting their growth and careers. What started as a bit of fun has turned into a full blown passion I crave. I’m able to pursue a passion whilst contributing in my small way to the lives of my loved ones. This trip to Vegas is another example of that.
Our friend Matt (literally my Hawaiian brother) has always had a passion for the arts and has wanted to steer his career in this direction. Dena needed a tour manager for Vegas and Matt was an obvious choice. A huge opportunity for Matt to learn and take a giant leap in creating the life he desires. He nailed it. Of course! To be able to provide opportunities for loved ones and help them achieve their dreams is a gift and so wonderful to watch. Competitiveness is not necessary. You’re stronger as a team!
